The words Graha and Bhutavidya are used as synonyms. The basis of Bhutavidya is Atharvaangirasa kritya which is found in Atharvaveda. At that period this branch of Bhutavidya was very popular but gradually its popularity fades away with the emergence of medicines/drugs related texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita etc. Bhut Vidya is generally known as science of demonic seizures or psychology.
Acharya Charaka gave three major types of treatment for various diseases, whether physical or mental:-
- Daiv-vyaypashaya Chikitsa
- Yukti-vyaypashaya Chikitsa
- Satvavajaya Chikitsa
Bhutavidya comes under Daiv-vyaypashaya Chikitsa which involves different types of rituals performed in Indian society like praying, sacrificing animals/humans yagya and etc. Yukti-vyaypashaya chikitsa is done with the help of drugs of plant, animal or mineral origin. And Satvavajaya chikitsa refers to the psychiatrist treatment, which can be termed in the voice of Sanskrit as follows :
(Sushruta Sutrasthana 1/7)
Acharya Sushruta gave the definition of Bhutvidya. He said- the remedies like prayers, sacrifices, and gifts etc. for God are performed to get rid of diseases caused by the aggression of devta, pitra, pisach and graha etc.
Some of the Acharyas mentioned about Bhut under the causes of Agantuja roga i.e. the diseases which originate spontaneously without any known reason. The term ‘bhut’ can be related with micro-organisms because the bhut are said to be invisible and in the same way micro-organisms are also invisible with naked eye.
Some of the present day Scholars kept Bhutavidya under mental disorders and some kept it under Microbiology. The disorders with unknown etiology and spontaneously outbreak are believed to be originated due to micro-organisms. Almost all the textbooks of medical science starts with the importance of unknown causes of diseases. And when humans are unable to understand this, they consider them to be originated from micro-organisms.
Microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, fungi and parasites, are present everywhere—in the soil, water, atmosphere and on the body surfaces, and are responsible for a large number of infectious diseases in humans. There are many examples of some infectious diseases which are the major health problems now-a-days:-
- Typhoid fever
- Cholera Pertussis
- Gonorrhoea Diphtheria
- Syphilis Tetanus
- Plague Anthrax, etc.
