AAHARA PARINAAMKAR BHAVA
The Food(Diet) we prepare gets affected by many natural factors before and after the preparation and at the same time it makes effect on the body of individual through many consequences be it good or bad.
This above fact has been described by our sages in detail but it seems to be quite difficult to understand. When studied in depth it provides a clear and descriptive understanding of Food and Diet.
Although the topic Food and Diet is described in Charak Samhita at various places as you can read in our other posts relevantly, but this fact is dealt in detail in some facts of ShariraSthan of Charak Samhita, which we are describing below:
1.Kaatysynyern sharirvridhiikarastitvam bhava bhavantih tadythaa – kaalyogah, swabhaavsansidhi, aaharsaushtavam, avighaatshcheti.~~~~~~~(Ch. Sha. 6/12)
- Proper-Time(Kala-Yoga) : Attainment of proper time such as development of body from adolescence to onwards. Here proper time refers to the proper arrangement of year, month, fort-night, week, day-night, current time or seasonal regimen in the favor of Diet and requirement of body in healthy of sick individual accordingly.
- Natural Factor of the body (Swabhaav Sansidhii): These are those invisible factor of the nature which are present in diet as well as the uncooked food.
- Quality of Diet (aaharsaushtavam) :Quality of diet depends on 8 specific factors for Dieting (Aahar Vidhi Visheshaytan) and 10 rules of Taking Diet (Aaahar Vidhi Vidhan) with 12 kind quality of Food (Dvadash Ashan Pravichaar- Sushruta).
- Absence of harm (Avighaat): Lack of Factors which result in the abolishment of body. Eg: Injurious Factors, Excessive or Absence sexual act, mental stress etc.
These are the factors which when present in proper form lead to development and growth of the body. They are referred as “Sharir Vradhikar Bhav” in Indian System of Medicine.
2.Balvridhikraasitvmee bhava bhavantih; tadythaa- balvatpurushe deshe janam balvatpurushee kale ch, sukhshay kaalyogah, beejkshetragunnsampanch, sharirsampanch, saatmysampanch, satvasampanch, swabhaavsansidisch, yovanam ch, karm xh, sanharshshveti ~~~~~~~(Ch. Sha. 6/13)
These factors (strength, sustainability, brilliance, physically and psychology strong, cheerfulness and distinct) are either blessed to the individual by birth or are attained by him through means of physical exercise, being happy and cheerful or any kind of means which leads to the attainment of the same.
3.Aaharaparinaamkarastvime bhava bhavanti; tadyatha—ushma, vaayuh, kledah, snehah, kaalah, samyogashcheti.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Ch. Sh. 6/14)~
There are factors which leads to the transformation of food by heat, vayu, moisture, unctuousness, time and balanced usage.
‘Ushama pachti’, means heat leads to the digestion of the food.
‘Vayuh apkarshati’, means vayu/air is responsible for the absorption of food/nutrients in the body.
‘Kledah shethilyamapadyati’, means kleda/ moisture produces dampness or looseness.
‘Sneho mardavum janyati’, means unction generates softness i.e. If food is taken with Cow’s clarified butter (Ghee) it leads to the softening and sweetening of food and softening of the body.
‘Kaalah paryaaptimbhinirvartyati’, means time brings sufficiency so that the food gets enough time to get digested properly.
‘Samyogastvesham parinaamdhatusamyakarah sampadyate’, means balanced use of the above factors regarding Diet brings the equilibrium of dhatus (which are the products of digestion i.e. Ras, Rakt, Mass, Meda, Asthi, Majja and Shukra).
The rigid, earthly, waterly, matterly and blood components of the diet lead to the rigidity of body in the relevant parts accordingly.
Acharya Charaka also mentioned about the power of assimilation as Aharashakti with regard to the strength of an individual.
“Aharashaktishcheti—Aharashaktiribhyavaharanshaktya jaranshaktya ch parikshya balayushi hyaharaayatte”
One should examine the strength of an individual in respect of aharashakti (power of assimilation). This is examined by the power of ingestion as well as digestion. Strength and life depends on diet.
Food and drinks with desirable smell, taste and touch and having been taken according to prescribed method is said as vital strength by the experts on the basis of observing their results directly; because the condition of internal fire depends on their fuel. They produce energy in mind, constitution of dhatus, strength, complexion and clarity of sense organs, if properly taken, otherwise they become harmful.
